Cha cha cha chia

Most of you have probably heard at some point or another that chia seeds basically have super powers… but why?

Fun fact, many are quick to call chia seeds a “superfood”, but the term “superfood” is actually made up… a marketing gimmickshocker. The term “superfood” was first coined in the 1920’s and became popular in the 1990’s. This term was used to increase the sales of many of the “superfoods” we know today: blueberries, ginger, turmeric, seaweed… the list goes on. But there is no medical term or scientific evidence to define just exactly what a “superfood” really is…  These foods are of course good for you, but hold no true magical power. Be careful not to fall into marketing gimmicks like this one!

Okay… Back to chia seeds…

Chia seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, 11 grams of fiber and 5 grams of plant based protein, per serving! Chia seeds are high in antioxidants which help protect our bodies from free radicals that can lead to aging and disease. Chia seeds are 40% fiber by weight, making them one of the best sources of fiber in the world! Absorbing 10-12 times their body weight in water, chia seeds form a gel like substance in our stomachs and expand, keeping us fuller for longer!

Studies have shown that incorporating the recommended amount of chia seeds daily (2.5 tbsp) can help aid in improving insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control. 2.5 tbsp a day can also provide you with 42% of your daily recommended amount of fiber. As Americans, we need all the fiber we can get! But keep in mind whenever you are increasing your fiber intake, make sure you are also increasing your water intake!

The best thing about chia seeds is that they don’t really have a flavor profile, meaning they are tasteless, meaning you can add them to just about anything! Top your smoothies, cereal, or peanut butter toast with them for an added *crunch*.

As you know, I even added them to my lemon “chia” seed muffin recipe in place of poppy seeds. Don’t forget to check out that recipe, here!
